Beginning Monday, May 8th and lasting approximately six weeks, contractors for the City of Casa Grande will begin road construction on Thornton Road from Peters Road to Main Avenue as part of the Thornton Road Improvement Project. Work will consist of paving work for roadway widening including turn lane expansion at the Southeast corner of Highway 84, installation of new sidewalk and curb and gutter, pavement marking and signing. The work is scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

Motorists will experience rolling closures that will include lane reductions and lane restrictions and are asked to drive cautiously through the detours as construction crews will be working on the roadway. 

Widening of existing pavement, installation of new sidewalk, curb and gutter, installation of slurry sealant and new signing and pavement marking will complete the project in June.

Update: May 4, 2023

The intersection of Thornton Road and Peters Road will reopen on Friday, May 5th to all lanes of traffic. Temporary four-way stop signs will be placed at the intersection while utility relocations occur. Once the utilities are in place, a traffic signal will be installed as part of the completed project. 

Upgrades for this project will include a four-lane roadway with a raised median, turn lanes, traffic signals, and a multi-use path with landscaping for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Selma Highway / Thornton Road Intersection Closure 

Ellison-Mills is closing Selma Highway / Thornton Road intersection on November 7th, 2022. They plan on having this intersection closed for 8 weeks. They are using the previous MOT plan to route traffic which is south along Thornton Road to Henna Road to Chuichu Road to Selma Highway to Thornton Road.

Starting July 18, 2022

Please be advised Thornton Road between Peters Road and Selma Road will be closed to through traffic. Traffic will be detoured east to Chuichu. The construction is expected to take approximately eight months to complete. 

The City of Casa Grande is improving safety, mobility, reliability, and multi-modal traffic flow along a section of Thornton Road south of the Gila Bend Highway. Improvements to this important north-south roadway will support existing businesses in the area, such as Lucid Motors, Walmart Distribution Center, and Tractor Supply, and attract new businesses. The planned upgrades along Thornton Road between Peter Road and Selma Highway include a 4-lane roadway with a raised median, turn lanes, traffic signals, and a 10' multi-use path with landscaping for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Thornton Road will be closed from I-8 to Selma starting September 26 to 30, 2022, to install a 24-inch waterline across Thornton.
