The City Attorney’s Victim Assistance Program, in partnership with the Casa Grande Elementary School District, will host the annual Children’s Flower Garden Planting Event on Wednesday, October 18.  The event will begin at 10:00 am at the flower garden in front of the City Hall Plaza, located at 510 E. Florence Blvd.  The event is being held as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The flower garden in front of City Hall is planted every year to remember children who have been victims of abuse.  According to Prevent Child Abuse America, 30 to 60 percent of children from homes where domestic abuse is present are also victims of abuse themselves.  Child physical abuse is fifteen times more likely to occur in families where domestic violence is present.  Close to 5 children die every day as a result of child abuse in the United States.

The schools participating in this year’s event are Casa Grande Middle School, Desert Willow Elementary School, Evergreen Elementary School, Villago Middle School and Casa Grande Union High School.  Against Abuse, Inc. will join in the event this year by planting pinwheels to promote awareness of child abuse prevention.  This year’s special event is sponsored by Arizona Yard Doctors LLC.

“More than a seed is planted in a garden,” said Victim Services Specialist, Terry Montijo. “Children can learn not only about their natural environment, but also about life skills such as responsibility, independence, leadership and teamwork in contributing a wonderful gift to our community.”

The Casa Grande Victim Assistance Program provides assistance, support, and protection to victims and their families, and educates them about domestic violence and the criminal justice process.  To learn more about these important resources, click here or call (520) 421-8600.
