CASA GRANDE YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH, 2009

MINUTES
In Attendance: Desiree Bender, Zoe Cooper, Katie Gamboa, Jordan Diaz, Briana Diogo, Travis Duran, Krystal Hinz, Courtney Mason, Nate Meyer, Brock Sgrignoli, Jessica Piper, Donna McBride, Matt Herman, and Jeff Molner. Guests: Blanca Varela, David Bridger, and Harold Kitching.
A. Call To Order
Travis Duran calls the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m.
B. Pledge of Allegiance
Travis led the Pledge.
C. Roll Call (update email, telephone listing; requests for excused absence)
Desiree moves to excuse Victor De La Cerda from today’s meeting. Brock seconds. Motion passes.
Briana moves to excuse Mia Quick from today’s meeting. Brock seconds. Motion passes.
Briana moves to excuse Kayla Bock from today’s meeting. Desiree seconds. Motion passes.
Briana moves to approve the resignation of Lexie Sweeney. Brock seconds. Motion passes.
D. Minutes:
• Jordan moves to approve the August 9, 2009 meeting minutes with the following changes; the removal of Lexie from the committee chairs; Nate seconds. Motion passes.
E. Reports
• City Projects and Activities Report
Teen Center- A Back to School BBQ will be held at the Teen Center on September 26, 2009 form 4pm to 8pm. On September 18th Brock and Desiree will help out at the mall.
Census Campaign- The Youth Commission will help with creating a canvas with hand prints for the campaign. The Census campaign is going well; brochures and shirts have been printed. Blanca Varela suggests that the Youth Commission produce a PSA for the Census Campaign.
Television Channel – Teen Talk – On Channel 11 a new show will begin called Teen Talk and will air bi-monthly. The show will be run by teens for teens. Ideas are needed for a catchy title and show topics. David Bridger also talked about the availability of public service announcements to the youth commission.
• Treasurer’s Report/Payment of Claims
Jordan moves to table the report due to changes in the financial system. Desiree seconds. Motion passes.
• Governor’s Youth Commission Status Report
Due to Victor De La Cerda’s absence the report is tabled.
• League of Cities and Towns Conference Debriefing
The youth commission was the star of the youth program and received many compliments. Travis did an excellent job speaking at the workshop. Some groups have come to the commission and shown interest in starting a commission such as Maricopa. The youth commission plans on creating a few sample agendas for next year’s league and suggesting that the youth stay for the keynote speaker before beginning their portion of conference.
• 9-11 Event Debriefing
The event went very well with the best turnout of over 230 people. The little kids were a hit with the crowd and next year the commission will have to purchase new glow sticks.
F. Old Business:
• Bylaw Recommendations
Jessica moves to submit the amendments of the Bylaws with spelling corrections to City Council for approval. Brock seconds. Motion passes.
G. New Business
• National Night Out (October 2nd) Participation
Save the date for this event on October 2, 2009 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm to help the Casa Grande Alliance. This may also be when the Commission paints the canvas for the Census Campaign to have the community involved.
• Youth Commission / City Council Session – Sept. 21st
The first half of the study session will include the Youth Commission informing Council of our goals, events, and the success of the Az League of Cities/Towns. The second half of the study session will include Victor De La Cerda and the Governor’s Youth Commission sharing their work and progress over the past year. The unconfirmed time for the study session is 6pm to 6:30pm.
H. Miscellaneous
• Briana reminds the commission about the Day of Shredding and Donna agrees to register the event with Casa Grande Cares. The event will be on October 24, 2009 from 9am to Noon. This year the commission is also partnering the city’s Recycling Department. Matt Herman is working on obtaining gloves for the event.
• Information on the Relay for Life will be coming shortly.
• Planning for the Halloween event is going well.
• A meeting for the Electric Light Parade will be held in November.
• Suggestions for the T.V. show will be taken till October 1st.
