LIBRARIAN (YOUTH) LIBRARIAN (YOUTH)

Ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual wishing to work in a public library within the Community Services Department. Candidate is experienced in professional library work including developing and maintaining an appropriate youth collection, working with technical services, managing the popular collections and supplemental programs to promote the library and its services to meet the needs of the community.


SALARY: $44,001 to $60,701 paid bi-weekly with appointment normally made at the entry level step; excellent benefits. Exempt under FLSA.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A Masters degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional experience in a public library; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to speak Spanish a plus. Night and weekend hours and flexibility in scheduling and location required.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides readers advisory and reference services to youth under the age of 13 and to the general public as needed.
• Oversees the review, selection, ordering, and weeding of out-dated materials for the library’s youth collection, such as "Easy Readers," picture books, and juvenile materials.
• Provides outreach to local elementary schools, community centers, and professional organizations to promote reading and the library to youth customers.
• Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, supervises, and collaborates with the Youth Librarian at the Main Library for the youth programming at the Vista Grande Public Library, such as story times, summer reading programs, and other early literacy programs as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of library organization, procedures, terminology, and trends; principles and practices of cataloging books & materials.
• Knowledge of the AACR2 and MARC Cataloging Rules.
• Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the principles of record keeping, records management, and managing a library’s youth collection.
• Skill in making oral presentations and promoting library services researching library computer systems and catalogs.
• Skill in developing, coordinating and conducting youth programs and activities; operating a computer utilizing a variety of software.
• Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
• Skill in providing effective customer service with tact and courtesy.
• Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
