The full requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative were implemented on June 1, 2009 which requires all adult travelers entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport or other federally approved Identification.

The new law means that adult U.S. citizens are no longer able to use a driver's license and birth certificate when entering the United States. However, U.S. citizen children under the age of 16 are able to present the original or certified copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or citizenship card.

Travelers are advised to apply for their U.S. passport book or card now if they plan to travel out of the country in the next year to avoid possible delays in their travel plans.
