The Casa Grande Community Services Department was presented with two awards on August 30th at the 62nd Annual Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA) Awards Banquet in Scottsdale, AZ. They received a “Natural Resources” award for the Casa Grande Mountain Park and an “Outstanding Program” award for the STARS Adaptive Sports Program.
Officially re-opened for the public in November 2011, the Casa Grande Mountain Park provides users with a variety of choices including long or short looped trails, short and long range circuits and picturesque views of the city and surrounding areas. The trailheads include kiosks which provide maps and safety information to educate users about the potential dangers of recreating in a desert environment. Other trailhead amenities include trash containers, benches and directional signage.
The Community Services Department conducted an extensive public participation and planning process to develop the Casa Grande Mountain Park Trail System Master Plan. Staff and more than 250 volunteers renovated the 1,100 acre mountain park during monthly trail building events. The planning process also produced a series of interagency agreements to facilitate mountain preservation efforts and restricting use to non-motorized public access. APRA recognized the Community Services Department for the efficient development and use of the Casa Grande Mountain Park.
